Characters/Pairings: Phoenix, brief Doug Swallow, mention of Phoenix/Dahlia
Genre: Angst, Drama

Summary: He hears the words, sees them formed, but his heart rejects them.

Any, any, "she'll chew you up and spit you out"

"She's bad news, Wright, you've got to get away from her fast." He can see Doug's mouth forming the words, hear them being spoken, but his heart refuses to believe them. You're lying, you're jealous, Dollie would never hurt a fly!

The next time he sees Doug, his body is lifeless beside a cable, Dollie knelt before it and weeping. He's arrested, his attorney and her assistant drag him to court, he hears Doug's words reverberating through his mind but they're still lies. If he has to go to jail to protect Dollie, he'll take whatever the judge hands down.

She's lying, she's lying, don't fall for it!

He knows he's making this difficult for his attorney, she's such a kind person and she's working so hard and he feels guilty but he won't let Dollie go to jail, he won't.

He eats the necklace, trying not to gag as the pieces force their way down his throat. If there's no evidence there's no conviction. I promise, Dollie, I promise...!

"How could any woman depend on you for anything, Phoenix Wright? I despise you."

The truth sinks its fangs into his heart, and he breaks, sobbing on the witness stand, his already stuffy nose clogging up even more as everything unravels and Doug was right.

He's not the first, either. Doug, of course, someone else Miss Fey refuses to talk about, probably others.

Dollie-Dahlia is arrested and put away, but the damage is done.

He goes back to his apartment that night and shoves the sweater in the back of his closet. Even after all that, he can't bear to throw it away.
